Being ‘angry’ is a completely normal human reaction and can sometimes be beneficial in many situations. However, not being able to control your thoughts and actions while you’re angry; that can be detrimental both to your surroundings and your own mental health.

Some studies have shown it can also eventually lead to cardiovascular diseases, bulimia, diabetes and external accidents.

Causes of anger

This can be classified into 2 categories; internal and external factors.

Internal factors are your own emotions and thoughts that can cause you to be angry; either at yourself or at others. Example: Mental instability, depression and alcoholism. These 3 are the most common internal factors which usually spikes anger in a person.

External factors are situations and daily occurrences in our daily life which can force a feeling of anger in your emotions; financial situations, stress at work or relationship problems.

Types of anger issues

  • Inward anger; these are some dark depression thoughts and usually involves a lot of negative self talk and to punish yourself; you’d usually refrain yourself from things you previously enjoyed and sometimes, basic necessities such as food and water.
  • outward anger; these are verbal and physical abuse towards other things and other people; it can include attacking people by hurting them and breaking things such as glass.
  • passive anger; also known as ‘passive aggressive behavior’; it means being sarcastic behavior and degrading others through your words.

What are the signs of anger issues?

Of course, different people will deal with their emotions of anger very differently; however, people with anger issues usually have some common behaviors which can be classifies as overwhelming and unbearable for the person itself; these are;

  • hurting others either verbally or physically
  • Always finding yourself feeling angry
  • Feeling that your anger is out of control
  • Frequently regretting something you’ve said or done when angry
  • small or petty things making you angry

How to deal with anger issues?

  • think before you speak and act; this may sound hard, but all you need to do is to take a deep breath in before you speak or act.
  • identify potential solutions; always keep in mind something you can do or say in case where you can no longer hold in your anger; you can ask to leave the room or for a glass of water.
  • Use humor; this could help soothe the intensity of the situation and enable you to better deal with the problem.
  • Take a timeout; literally, just walk away. Deal with whatever the situation is when you’re calm. It’ll lead to better outcome.

What are the physical symptoms?

Anger can affect different parts of your body, including your heart, brain and muscle. Some symptoms could be;

  • increased blood pressure
  • increased heart rate
  • tingling sensation
  • muscle tension

Conclusion

Always remember that it’s okay to feel angry; it’s normal. But you should know when is the right time to fight back and when is the right time to retreat.
